Evidently a new generation is maturing in German cinema, a generation for whom
technical perfection is not the be-all and end-all. Once again film-makers have a story to tell. Even with the usual financial strain among the movie makers, amazingly German feature films have undergone an upturn in spite of all the bad news. The seventeen films featured during the German Film Week are produced in the years 2001 to 2005 and display interest in new thematic and stylistic trends in German cinema. It is a diverse collection dealing with a wide variety of subject-matter revealing an insight into contemporary German cinema. The film festival is a joint programme of the Goethe-Institut Bangladesh and the Chalachitram Film Society.

The Ninth day
(Der neunte Tag)
the ninth day In February 1942, the Luxembourgian priest Henri Kremer was granted nine days’ leave from the concentration camp where he was imprisoned. The Gestapo officer Gebhardt confronted him with a life-or-death decision: Kremer was asked to betray his own convictions by persuading his national church to collaborate with the National Socialists. If he failed to do so, not only he, but also his family and his imprisoned co-brethren would be facing imminent death. For nine days, on each of which he had brilliant rhetorical and intellectual duels with the Gestapo officer, Kremer grappled with this insoluble moral conflict that defied notions of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. The resultant film, built around extracts from the priest Jean Bernard’s diary, is a vivid and stirring specimen of polished dialogue and excellent acting that examines the eternal issue of individual responsibility.

The issue of a “generation” is a running theme through the film, reflecting the new perspective that young Middle and Eastern European filmmakers have of themselves. Tradition and folklore are presented in a new, fresh and visual light. The concept of generation is not intended to focus our attention on differences between countries, but rather to create an exciting new framework for comparison.

The film festival is a joint programme of the Goethe-Institut Bangladesh and the Chalachitram Film Society.
